I believe the heart and soul of American soccer isn’t found in the players whose resumes are full of trophies and honors but in the players who carry the game in their back pockets.  I don’t believe in “coach motivated players.”  I feel that players must be passionate about playing and my job is to protect and foster that passion.

At the youth level, coaching soccer is about teaching children how their actions impact the game. It's practically impossible to teach them how to react in every possible situation.  Coaches should constantly present the game’s problems and inspire the players to practice making their own interpretations and decisions to find the solutions.

At the higher levels of the game, soccer coaching with a dictatorship style has been shown to suppress intrinsic motivation. Quality of play decreases when players are reminded that they're working for someone else, like parents or coaches. The modern soccer coach is definitely not a controller of the game who dictates every situation.  Such mentality has been proven to actually decrease the ability that a coach has guiding the team.

I think players can accomplish great things when they love playing the game.  “The more fun they have the better they play!”
